Store in the freezer for a longer life

No need to panic, there are lots of foods that you can store in the freezer instead of the fridge.  Did you know you can freeze butter, milk and cheese?  Here are some examples of what you can freeze, and how to defrost them so that they don’t end up like your frozen shorts!

Here’s some examples:

Milk: All milk can be stored in the freezer and defrosted before use. Defrost fully in the fridge before using.

Cream: Cream can be frozen, remember to shake well to distribute the fat throughout.

Cheese: Hard cheeses freeze well, as do brie and camembert. If you are buying a big block of hard cheese grate it first and freeze to use later. Use on cheese on toast, on top of baked beans or in an omelette.

Bread:  bread, rolls, pittas, bagels and crumpets are all easily frozen. Many toasters have a defrost button.

Pasta: Fresh pasta is a great option to keep in the freezer. Either defrost or add straight to boiling water.  Check the packet for advice.

Fruit and vegetables:  Goes without saying, also think of fruits like bananas and berries which can be used for smoothies as well as baking.

Check the packaging for suitability of freezing and storage times.

Remember:-

• Make sure any warm dishes are cooled before putting them in your freezer.

• Place food in an air-tight container or wrap it well in freezer bags or freezer wrap.

• If the food has been defrosted it must be cooked before being eaten to be safe.

• Once defrosted, food should be consumed immediately.
