Cafe Cossachok, 10 King Street, Glasgow – July 2012

Some food and a concert as part of Merchant City Festival. Gitane Ecosse playing some gypsy influenced jazz went excellently with the good food. £20 for two courses and the concert was excellent value for money.

Blini with vegetable ikra – light, Russian wheat pancakes filled with an aubergine caviar (this caviar is a typical eastern european dish made at home – basically a puree made with vegetables)  The chunks made it filling, tasty and did taste home made as opposed to jar ikra.

Borscht – always a firm favourite.  Served with sour cream and fresh rye bread.  Bit watery compared to previous Borscht tasted but tasty with a bit of a kick and came with 2 slices of rye bread, other sourdough and rye bread provided to table to mop up juices.

St. Petersburg Blitnzes – pancakes stuffed with mashed potatoes, mushrooms and fried onions served in a mild creamy sauce, salad garnish – Delicious.  Very, very filling.  Tasted like good country food.

Siberian Pelmeni – russian ravioli stuffed with beef and pork mince accompanied with salad garnish and vinegar, mustard and sour cream.   The dough wasn’t doughy at all and the minced meat was flavoursome.

Off course we had to try some Vodka

Rose, Vanilla and Herb with Gold flakes come recommended.  Was sad to see that Honey Vodka wasn’t on the menu, a fave of mine.

Food was excellent, music excellent, service quick and attentive.  Only problem was we fancied an Armenian Brandy and a Russian Coffee during the concert and was told the noise of the coffee machine was too loud so no couldn’t do that :(, so we ended up with neither of them 🙁

Overall glad to go again!
