Bo’Vine, 365 Byres Road, Glasgow – Meat Restaurant

Passion Fruit Bellini BoVine Restaurant GlasgowBo’Vine has been around for a few years,  we’ve been a couple of times before but thought it was time for a return visit after spotting a nicely priced Travelzoo voucher for Chateaubriand for 2 with cocktails!

We were greeted and quickly seated with a Passion Fruit Bellini (which was quite tart but nice) and some refreshing cucumber iced water.

To start…

Carpaccio of Perthshire Venison , Pine Nuts, Parmesan, Pickled Wild Mushrooms with a Sloe Gin Shot Bovine Glasgow

Carpaccio of Perthshire Venison, Pine Nuts, Parmesan, Rocket, Pickled Wild Mushrooms with a Sloe Gin Shot £7  Lovely! Textured and rather meaty mushrooms including a few enokitake. Mr M was very happy with this one.

Stornoway Black Pudding, Poached Hens Egg, Pancetta, Red Wine Jus Bovine GlasgowStornoway Black Pudding, Poached Hens Egg, Pancetta, Red Wine Jus £6  mmm soft, moist, perfect poached egg with our favourite black pudding, and not over cooked!

Chateaubriand £55 with sides of triple cooked chips £3 and sprouts, pancetta and chestnuts £3Chateaubriand (usual price £55 for 2) with sides of triple cooked chips £3 and sprouts, pancetta and chestnuts £3

It was a small portion (as this is between 2), but then it was a deal and not from the full-price menu, so not really enough for two hungry people (which we were!).  We asked for rare but it was more medium-rare, so still pink and tender. The tomatoes were lovely and both sides were pretty tasty too.

Bo'Vine Grand Dessert for two £12

Grand Dessert for two £12
  • Dark Chocolate Tart, Black Olive Sorbet,  Caramelised White Chocolate Powder
  • Seville Orange Pudding.
  • Vanilla Pod Crème Brulee with Macaroon
  • Iced Popcorn Parfait
  • Prune & Armagnac Cheesecake, Apple Puree,  Milk Ice Cream

With all the desserts sounding so good we couldn’t pick one,  so went for the lot – well miniature versions anyway (more places should do this)!

We knew black olive sorbet existed as we’d heard about it being available at other places but this was the first time either of us had tried it, it was rather strange and probably tasted as you’d expect – a slightly salty iced black olive mush; which doesn’t sound too appetizing but it was actually pretty nice and a good palate cleanser. The popcorn parfait was also interesting and unusual, actually all the desserts were were delicious and so course this was the highlight of our meal.

We also ordered a Cucumber Mojito £6.50, which contained Hendricks, cucumber and sugar syrup, very refreshing and a change from a minty Mojito.

Overall, good service and great food but a smaller portion of Chateaubriand from what we were expecting (and have had before elsewhere), it was an additional £31.50 for extras. Would definitely go back.
