What to see in Blaenau Ffestiniog as it gets UNESCO World Heritage status

Once the second largest town in Wales, Blaenau Ffestiniog is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and we are chuffed to bits.

Mrs Foodie spent a few days on holiday in Blaenau Ffestiniog way back as a kid and returned with Mr Foodie when we were on holiday at nearby Portmeirion, so Blaenau Ffestiniog has a lot of happy memories.

Where is Blaenau Ffestiniog?

Blaenau Ffestiniog is located in the county of Gwynedd, in the heart of Snowdonia

What is UNESCO?

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. It seeks to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences and Culture.

From UNESCO

“UNESCO develops educational tools to help people live as global citizens free of hate and intolerance. UNESCO works so that each child and citizen has access to quality education. By promoting cultural heritage and the equal dignity of all cultures, UNESCO strengthens bonds among nations. “

Why has this area been added to the world heritage list?

So why has Blaenau Festiniog been added to the UNESCO  World Heritage List?  As you can see from the gallery below, the mining of slate and the industrialisation of the area had a major effect on the natural environment.  The impact on the culture and environment by the industrial revolution in Wales has been recognised as a seismic transition in the history of Wales.
