Berlin Blog Day 3

Breakfast today was a highly technological affair at Data Kitchen.  The courtyard setting could be a million miles from the busy Hackesher Markt area outside.  Inside meeting spaces and food mingle.  We settled down and ordered our breakfast through the app (you can borrow an Ipad or order through their website as well – Data Kitchen). Your order is processed and delivered through a secure boxed area, where only you can open the hatch.

The food not only looks stunning but tastes delicious as well.  Mr Foodie picked eggs in a glass, which was creamed spinach, boiled eggs and potato foam with bacon whilst I picked the Max sandwich.

We wandered around the area for a bit doing some shopping in places like Muji (if only Glasgow still had one!) then headed out to Hansaviertel.

The Hansaviertel was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt from 1957 to 1961 as a housing estate project called Interbau by international master architects such as Hugo Alvar Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius and Oscar Niemeyer etc.

Since we were in the West we jumped on the S-Bahn to Charlottenburg to visit Rogacki (pronounced Ro-GATZ-ki), a deli/cafe with counters selling everything from cheese to meat to smoked fish.  In the centre is an area for Oysters and wine, plus other fancier dishes. At the left hand side the cheaper canteen-style eating area.  Grab a tray or a seat at the middle area and eat like a Berliner.

The very first Rogacki shop was opened in Wedding in 1924 and in 1935 the shop moved to its current location in Charlottenburg where the store is led today by the grandson of the original founders.

Next up some exploring of scent Harry Lehmann.    This place is fabulous and well-worth seeking out.

Glasgow food travel blog Harry Lehman Berlin Founded in 1926, Harry Lehmann is one of those stores you could spend a long time in – there are rows of perfume bottles with amazing smells but which one is best? Well you’ll need to work your way around them all! There are ready-made scents or you can have one made specifically for you.

Pick out a bottle, which has the most wonderful retro label, from the various sizes to have it filled with your desired fragrance (they have a selection of spray bottles too).

Some more wandering about the neighbourhood led us to Brauhaus Lemke am Schloss Mr Foodie ordered the beer probe 😱 Thankfully it turned out better than it sounds: 6 of their 8 brews for €9! Their two strongest beers around 10%ABV sadly aren’t available in the probe.

Suitably filled up with beer it was time for dinner at Wohlfahrt’s Wirtshaus. This Austrian restaurant was perfect for a casual and relaxed atmosphere with tasty food and real Berliners.  I had the Brett’l Jause which was a mix of cheese, meat, vegetables with fresh horseradish and spreadable smoked bacon fat whilst Mr Foodie had chicken with pumpkin seeds and potato & cucumber salad. Both were just what we needed after a day walking about.

Of course Austrians do know how to do dessert and these apricot dumplings were perfect bundles of gooey jam.Glasgow food travel blog wohlfahrts wirthaus Berlin Foodie explorers
