A trio of great value wines for the festive season
Our search for affordable Christmas wine this year takes us to Aldi. These are budget-friendly wines that can generally be purchased online as well as in-store.
Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut
Small Champagne house Philizot & Fils bring this blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. With notes of ripe apples and zest. It’s not often that you can find Champagne so cheap. This is a bargain buy for Christmas at £12.99, although since trying this we’ve also discovered that Aldi are also selling Nicolas De Montbart champagne for £9.95 on their website. This is probably the only 75cl bottle of Champagne you’re going to find for under a tenner – we haven’t tried that one though but we can certainly recommend the Veuve Monsigny for the money.
Specially Selected Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio is probably Glasgow’s favourite white wine grape variety and this bottle in the Aldi Classic Icons range with a distinctive Venice carnival mask comes from Italy’s Delle Venezie region. It is crisp and smooth with brilliant acidity. Suited best for appetizers and fish and white meat. Priced at a mere £5.49.
Costières de Nîmes
A red wine that will stand up to the biggest of roasts you can try it with. A robust red, the grapes in this full-bodied red wine are grown in the most southerly point of France’s Rhône Valley wine region, Costières de Nîmes. With flavours of liquorice and sweet spices, and notes of dried herbs. Priced at £5.99
All three of these wines are outstanding value but don’t stop there as you’ll also find plenty of other great deals on South African pinotage and French Cremant, a wonderful alternative to Champagne for under £10.
