Located in the Friedrichshain area of Berlin and a 5 min walk from Ostbahnhof is Ostel, a nostalgic hostel ideal for backpackers, young couples and anyone with a love for Ostaligie and DDR kitsch.

ostel hostel ddr berlinWe are big fans of modern history and Berlin/East German history and have eyed up Ostel on previous trips.  The very nice folks at Visit Berlin supplied us with accommodation to explore the city.  It was a great location being near to S and U Bahn as well as mainline railway and bus services – all you need for a Berlin break.

The rooms are located within each flat, you might be lucky and get a balcony or be located in the old children’s bedroom!

Retro books line the bookcase and walls are covered with flowery wallpaper and a portrait of Erich Hoenicker in some rooms

With no lift, this is a real housing estate, you get the pleasure of lifting your own bags up the stairs!

There is also an on-site DDR style restaurant to complete the experience.
