Budget accommodation in New York

Finding somewhere cheap and within easy reach of transport is always top of our to-do list when arranging a holiday.

After much searching, we came across Greenpoint Lodge, located in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn.

Greenpoint is on the G subway line and is a quiet but bustling neighbourhood.  There’s a large Polish community here so lots of Polski delis and you’ll hear a lot of Polish spoken.

Nassau Ave MTA subway station is about 10 steps from the front door!  So grab a MetroCard (info here) and discover New York from the base of one of the boroughs.

Inside Greenpoint Lodge it’s a bit like a hostel, which feels like shared student accommodation.  I used to be apprehensive about hostels but it’s not all dorms and parties.  There are private rooms in many, some have en-suites and (touch wood) in our ten years of travelling we’ve never had an awful hostel experience.Greenpoint lodge Brooklyn New York NYC accommodation

Our room had everything we needed.  Fresh air, TV, storage and WiFi.  The temperature was comfortable. Lots of storage with both cupboard and drawers.  Plus a hairdryer and towels.

The bathroom was shared between three rooms.  A shower/bath, sink, toilet and even cotton balls and magazines.  Clean and tidy as well.

Also on our floor was a kitchen.  Everything you would need.  Kettle, cooker, fridge, microwave and crockery.  Again all clean and tidy.

The floor below had another kitchen as well as a lounge with books, magazines, cable TV. A Mac for Internet access was also provided.

We were very happy with Greenpoint Lodge for the cheap cost, at a mere £140 for 2 people staying 6 nights (during Feb 2016), this was a bargain when most hotels in Manhattan would cost over that for one night alone! It was clean, tidy and had everything we needed.  The local area was quiet but with lots of shops, cafes, bars and a subway station on the doorstep.

We booked through HostelWorld.

TL; DR

+ Cheap
+ Cheerful
+ Nice neighbourhood
+ Really handy for the G line
