I’ve been meaning to check out Burr & Co since they opened after the refurbishment of The George Hotel and finally found myself there for a girl’s lunch on Monday.

Food

A good selection of pastries, sandwiches, snacks, salads, cakes and slices.

My quiche was creamy with a flaky pastry instead of the usual shortcrust which worked well. It arrived warm and was quickly devoured! They asked if we’d like the smoked salmon bagel to be toasted which we all agreed was a great touch. It gave the bagel a bit of crunch without warming the lox and cream cheese. I didn’t get to try the scotch egg but was assured it was tasty. We also had the chorizo & courgette salad as well as the quinoa, carrot & rocket salad. The quinoa salad was refreshing and light, the chorizo was well balanced with the courgettes; both salads worked great mixed together!

Cake

“It’s always a good thing when the highlight of your meal is cake” according to my lunch pal. All the cakes & traybakes looked tempting. We settled on the lemon drizzle, pistachio and mint, lime & courgette. All three were moist and packed with flavour. Standout was definitely the pistachio cake!

Drinks

Coffee from Caravan Coffee – Our two flat whites were both fantastic.

Tea from Eteaket & Edinburgh Tea and Coffee – The whisky tea lacked whisky aroma or taste and was just like regular tea. Slight disappointment the tea wasn’t loose leaf.

We enjoyed both the Bundaberg Blood Orange soda and Lemon, Lime & Bitters. They also have the usual selection of fizzy drinks, bottled water as well as small bottles of wine & prosecco.

Decor

Much larger inside that it looks from the outside. There’s only one large table with stools for six and one table that seats four. All other tables best for twos and threes as they’re quite close together. The space is cozy and relaxed.

Service

Order and pay at the counter, they bring everything to the table. They staff were all friendly and service was timely.

Summary

Overall, a great option for lunch or a quick coffee and cake in the city center.
